I don't know where i got in my head the notion i was leaving on April 2nd (probably because that's the day i'm scheduled to dig into the work with Dwayne Jones of I build By Faith), but i almost freakin' missed my plane. Had i not called to offer some condolences to a friend of mine, who asked, during the late-evening conversation, when i would be leaving, i might still be asleep instead of taxi-ing into the arrival gate in Miami, FL.
So i squeezed 24 hours of work into 6, and got it done thanks to family and friends, who shared some of the load. I checked all my records at the airport and all seems in order. So now, a bit of a layover, then i connect with D. Jones and head over to Port Au Prince.
On the plane, i connected with a wonderful spirit, a great grandmother headed to the Bahamas. We started talking and she lives in Cookeville, TN, where my father is roughly from and my grandaddy lived out his 92 years. She was from NY, where i used to live, from a small neighborhood where an ex college girlfriend was from. An artist, she spoke of Amiri Baraka and others in the black arts movement, joking about being the only "white woman" on the scene.
We laughed. It was a joy that eased the pain inflicted on my knees by my hurried affirmation of a window seat. I hate window seats. 6'2" don't do windows.
When we were de-planing, she gave me some folded bills and said it was "for the cause." i was touched by that, and invited her to come see a show at ART one day. I truly hope she will. Experiences like that make me know that the universe is working, and in my case, working toward higher ideals being manifest; getting me saved from a missed plane and mission, and at the same time, making sure that on the first day of this month, i wasn't an April Fool.
Stay tuned, and please, leave a comment here. I don't know how much access i'll have to social media networks.
