A Sho' 'Nuff Controversy?

so... i get a forward from our web administrator over at the site for the recent, wildly successful holiday play, "Sho' 'Nuff Nativity." apparently, we'se ig'nant knee-grows is done put togetha a minstrel show! at least, according to one lone stranger. i appreciate the ton of phone calls, emails, texts, etc. that came in from many of you who saw the show. i think this cat didn't see it at all. i won't list his/her email address, because i want to encourage solid discourse. i'll just copy and paste the body of the email.

"Black people have been held back by people
who promote such nonsense. Would you want
to go to a doctor who said "sho' 'nuff?" Or
how about "axe" instead of "ask?"

What a shame that there is no intelligent black
person to whom black children will listen. Their
role models are hip hop dumb asses. Bill Cosby
tried but no one wanted to hear it. He's to be
admired. P Diddy should be exterminated! You
people should be ashamed!"

-email name withheld

so...comments? i'd like to hear from people who saw the show as well as people who didn't. for the record, i promoted, proudly, the event. i don't know the profession of this person, nor would i dare try to assume they know anything about current events or culture, so i won't launch an ad hominem attack. but i will say, i had to chuckle out loud at the absurdity of the argument.

as a bit of an answer: i'd prefer a doctor whose skill is in the practice of medicine. i've been surrounded by people who split verbs and i'd leave my kid with them, and others who spoke the "King's English" who i wouldn't trust with a napkin. as for intelligent black people, they listen to the messages they find in shows that they come see before passing judgment. i don't know how a hip-hop nativity would look, but i'm sure it would be fascinating. "Sho' 'Nuff" visited the gamut of music from African drums to Spirituals, Gospel, Jazz, Soul, etc.

calling for the extermination of someone is interesting, too--even if called for in perfect english.

what do ya'll think? (oops...is ya'll too country?)

I hope u don't let ignorant comments get u down, my brother. There is still a lot of ignorance out there, but there r also a lot of folks (some black, some white, some beige) who appreciate and value cultural diversity in all of its many wonderful forms. Our society needs a lot more education, and not just the kind u get in school! More than anything, we need to form real, trusting relationships with each other. Maybe then we'll stop fighting each other over grammar and musical styles and start working together to fight injustice, hunger, and poverty!

Keep up the good work.

Wow, that was indeed a rather strong comment. I am a certified Speech Language Pathologist. I have been for approximately 12 years. In this profession there is a term called "code switching". In different environments we all tend to use different forms of communication. Sho' 'Nuff Nativity was drama, the stage. In my professional as well as personal opinion, the bigger message was not what was said/heard but what was felt. I hope this person was moved by this tremendous piece of ART. That, of course was the communicative intent. Peace

Bro Kev,
i love ignorance, because it proves that there is a need for enlightment! you're right on point. maybe we'll stumble around and get the big picture one day.

maybe when the person sees Sho' 'Nuff on TV, he'll understand it better. but then again, you never know.

thanks for the comments.

Hey jeff,
As you know there are people who are in the business on tearing down versus building up. They really think "if it's done by whites...it must be right". What a shame I wonder did he call or write to TV about the sit-com "The Fresh Prince". You ever seen a fresh prince...anyway.
You know how I feel if you didn't see the show how would you know?
Hold up the Light.

Hey JOC (and everyone else),
Anyone who attended the Amun Ra Theatre holiday production of Sho’ ‘Nuff and did not receive it as an inspiration and blessing needs to be exterminated – because they are actually already walking around dead (ha-ha to the haters and shame for saying someone should be exterminated – I just used it as a play on words from hater-ation). I can play around with words just as ‘haters’ can - when they 'hate' on something as amazing as Sho’ ‘Nuff. I can debate and waste time by entertaining an opinion – which is just that – an opinion - but majority rules and the consensus (yes, Mr. Carr asked if everyone enjoyed the show and the applaud answered YES) is that Sho’ 'Nuff is indeed an affordable family oriented holiday production that deserves accolades from ‘hear’ to doomsday. As you noticed, I misspelled “here” previously with ‘hear’ because setting aside any equipment technicalities interfering with the ‘sound’ and speaker system – if you actually ‘heard’ Sho’ ‘Nuff, you sho nuff heard and witnessed talent via song, dance, music, painting, and magnificent directing. JOC, please keep the Amun Ra Theatre going strong without regard to pleasing the ‘tə máytō - tə mat’o’ people of the world; they are truly missing the big picture –Amun Ra Theatre is presenting the hidden light within – keep on with your good works and perhaps it will one day light a (haters) way. The children need a forum that creates and not corrupts; thanks Amun Ra Theatre.
